There’s a huge pile of wildlife over here that I see and exclaim about. Rarely though does it sit still long enough for me to exclaim about it, then go fetch my camera and continue to sit still while I get a picture of it. Granted it’s not a very good picture, because it was sitting on a window, and I’m not a very good photographer. Still, a stick insect!
The presence of this stick-like beast makes me a tad suspicious. It is after all a well known fact that everything in this country is trying to kill me. It didn’t, however, at least not yet but I will remain on my guard all the same.
In order to get pictures of the other beasties I see, I suspect I will either need a much better lens for my camera, or I will need to train hard as in the stealthy arts and learn to sneak up really close to snap pictures without scaring them away (or being eaten for that matter).
Or just get really lucky.
The shot below really doesn’t count as wildlife, as such. The little fella in this picture is an Eastern Box turtle and was brought to our house by a well meaning contractor who rescued him from a road and intended to turn him loose in a safe place (this happened before I arrived over here incidentally!) However, apparently if you move one of these little chaps, they try to return to where you picked them up from, which in this instance was a considerable distance away and the fella who brought him couldn’t remember exactly where and as such turning him loose would almost certainly have been a death sentence for him. So a habitat was built for him and he is now a semi-domesticated turtle.
Jeremiah is a shy little fella and many people who visited the house left without seeing him and I suspect many started to believe the enclosure was in fact devoid of turtles and had been constructed entirely so we could stand giggling while people peered into it trying to catch a glimpse of the turtle. He is real, honestly! take a look:

[...] in the interests of lazy blogging, there is a post containing a picture of Jeremiah Swakhammer right over here. That would be Daniel’s blog, but lest you get all excited I feel obligated to warn you that [...]

No, the turtle is a lie. Like cake.
Also, stick insects are a scout class, not a combat class.
Wait for the preying mantis horde. And/or/also horseflies.

This is your Other Mother Midwest Region -in-Law. Since you are part of the extended family now, I thought I’d best check out your blog. You probably didn’t realize that the family extended as far west as Nebraska, did you? Not to worry, I’m a very easy going in-law. (I let my step kids ride their bikes without helmets when they were little–gasp!) Welcome to the US and sorry for the Social Security office in advance…
And horseflies are bad scoobies. Period.
